How Extended Range ADCPs Improve Data Quality in Moored Systems

Presenters: Ryan Nicoll, DSA Ocean and Paul Devine, Teledyne Marine

If an oceanographic mooring deflects too much, even the most sophisticated ADCPs will record useless data. Ideally, we can check mooring deflections in advance of deployment to build confidence in data quality. Calculating the deflection of a mooring line is a tricky process, as it's not an obvious calculation you can do in your head or on paper for most typical systems. In today's webinar, Ryan and Paul will walk you through why it's important to understand how extended range ADCPs improve data quality in moored systems. They will use ProteusDS Oceanographic to illustrate how mooring deflection is calculated in advance with a comparison of several conceptual moorings using Teledyne Pinnacle and Long Ranger ADCPs. This conversational webinar will walk you through your design considerations, the trade-offs, and the tools that can be used to assist you in real-world application.

Presenter: Professor Timmy Gambin, University of Malta

For over an entire decade, the Sicilian Superintendence of the Sea together with RPM Nautical, has explored the seabed off the Egadi Islands off Trapani. This ambitious and unique project produced some incredible results including, but not limited to, the discovery of numerous bronze rams. Despite the success of the first phases of the project it became clear that a new approach was necessary to survey the site in a more efficient manner.

Presenter: Jen Aitken, Research Scientist/Product Manager, Teledyne Optech

The Pacific Ocean is a hotspot for waste that we dump from our coastal cities or lose overboard from ships. Its currents push the trash into the middle of the ocean where it remains for years, concentrated into a region called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Scientists and environmentalists are considering ways to reduce plastic waste including Ocean Cleanup who have came with the idea of using static floating barriers that could capture trash before it could break down. <itunes:summary>Presenter:Jen Aitken,Research Scientist/Product Manager,Teledyne OptechThe Pacific Ocean is a hotspot for waste that we dump from our coastal cities or lose overboard from ships.

Join our host, Ben Allsup, for a closer look at the recent completion of a 4-year journey that circumnavigated the Atlantic Ocean in four legs, a first for an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The Slocum Glider “Silbo” was deployed in 2016 from Cape Cod and returned from its epic adventure in late June of 2020. Learn about each leg of the journey, the glider’s purpose, maintenance of this long duration glider, and the many programs and lives it touched along the way. From testing new equipment and software, challenging the models for long duration piloting, collecting hurricane data, and participating in the Challenger Glider mission, Silbo’s journey was action packed!

Learn about more upcoming webinars at www.teledynemarine.com/link

AGH University of Science and Technology

Product grant: Teledyne BlueView M900 MK2 Sonar

Water depths are still not explored frontiers. However, more and more human-made object appears on sea-bottom, ranging from ordinary plastic pollutants to forgotten naval mines. In the project, we are aiming to develop new methods for underwater object recognition and scene analysis based on the joined visual and sonar signals processed by the deep neural networks that can have a significant impact on this problem. Reliable means of detection of human-made objects will significantly increase all efforts' effectiveness simply by determining potential contamination hot-spots and prioritizing the workforce on places that are higher on the list. Autonomous drones equipped with such system could mark certain positions or even clean depths similarly to surface solutions that are developed now all around the world.
Measuring Extreme Nearshore Storm Waves Off the Irish Coast

Professor Dias will present a statistical analysis of nearshore waves observed during two major North–East Atlantic storms in 2015 and 2017. Surface elevations were measured with a 5-beam acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) at relatively shallow waters off the west coast of Ireland. To compensate for the significant variability of both sea states in time, a novel approach was used for analyzing the non-stationary surface-elevation series. The distributions of crest and wave heights are compared with theoretical predictions based on the Forristall, Tayfun and Boccotti models. In particular, the latter two models have been largely applied to and validated for deep-water waves. Profession Dias will show that they also describe well the characteristics of waves observed in relatively shallow waters.

Contact marine-supportDK@teledyne.com with your License-ID today to get your new free valuable SeaBat v2.0 update to enhance your SeaBat capabilities and survey experience.

Teledyne Marine is pleased to announce several
new features to our world leading multibeam echosounders the SeaBat T20 and
SeaBat T50 - the free of charge SeaBat v2.0 update and now the ability to
purchase for your T20 our unique Normalized Backscatter. The SeaBat v2.0 update is applied to your
SeaBat by our easy-to-use SeaBatUpdater, so you can easily update your existing SeaBat
T-series hardware with these valuable features.

The SeaBat
T-series v.2.0 update launches 1024 beams and Sonar UI visualization
enhancements at no extra cost, and now has availability for you to acquire Normalized
Backscatter for your SeaBat T20.

With the new v2.0 update Teledyne Marine now introduces 1024 true beams, as well as always
having 1024 Soundings, for all single head SeaBat T-series products. The increase from 512 to 1024 beams gives you improved target
detection capability due to the extremely high data density, leading to more
precise surveys and shorter survey time.

For projects where you need to have a
minimum of counts in a grid cell, 1024 beams make it possible to fulfil that
requirement, increasing your possibilities to win more projects.

Another significant improvement in the SeaBat
v2.0 is the visualization feature update to the Teledyne Marine Sonar User
Interface (SUI). Adding color by depth,
to the already intuitive wedge history display, takes the operator to the next
level, making the experience even more intuitive. The real time interpretation
of the seabed helps you faster identify your survey area aiding productivity.

In the SUI you are now able to save the raw
S7K files directly to your available drives - this function has been moved from
the back end to the SUI - so giving you an easy and time saving set up by
avoiding going out of the SUI to save your files.

Finally, the v2.0 update for the SeaBat
T-series enables our unique Normalized Backscatter output to also cover
the surface based SeaBat T20-P and SeaBat T20-R. When you purchase this
license, you will have the possibility to increase the use of your existing
SeaBat T20 with multiple deliverables from a single survey. The backscatter is compensated for the
effects of sonar settings which enables you to collect improved bathymetry
data and true backscattering estimations at the same time, thereby reducing
survey time and costs.

“With this update we confirm our commitment
to continue developing features and performance enhancements to the already
world leading SeaBat T-series”, says Uni Bull, Product Manager of the SeaBat
systems. “v2.0 Update for SeaBat T-series is the best update we have ever
produced. It is an update which we guarantee makes your SeaBat T-series an even
more powerful survey tool that will make better use of your resources and
manpower.”

license, you will have the possibility to increase the use of your existing
SeaBat T20 with multiple deliverables from a single survey. The backscatter is compensated for the
effects of sonar settings which enables you to collect improved bathymetry
data and true backscattering estimations at the same time, thereby reducing
survey time and costs.

“With this update we confirm our commitment
to continue developing features and performance enhancements to the already
world leading SeaBat T-series”, says Uni Bull, Product Manager of the SeaBat
systems. “v2.0 Update for SeaBat T-series is the best update we have ever
produced. It is an update which we guarantee makes your SeaBat T-series an even
more powerful survey tool that will make better use of your resources and
manpower.”

For more information about the new v2.0
