A 16-Year Legacy of Sustained Ocean Observation

Since January 2009, the University of Western Australia’s (UWA) IMOS Ocean Glider team has been at the forefront of autonomous ocean observation. With unwavering commitment, the team has launched or recovered ocean gliders every week for 16 years, culminating in the 400th mission in May 2025. This milestone marks a significant achievement in marine science, innovation, and collaboration, supported by the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) and National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

Oceanology International 2024 Recap

Oceanology International 2024 was a major success for the Teledyne Marine team. More than 8,000 attendees visited the show at ExCel London, where over 500 exhibitors from diverse sectors were present. Teledyne Marine had a prominent display at the trade show, featuring bold graphics, two meeting rooms, and a relaxing coffee bar. All Teledyne Marine business units were well represented, including Vehicles, Benthos, Imaging, Instruments, Interconnect and PDS. At the Royal Victoria dock, demonstrations were taking place both on the dockside and on the water at the same time.

This episode is the second in a special four-part series on “Silbo", Teledyne Webb Research's autonomous underwater glider that recently made the first ever circumnavigation of the Atlantic Ocean by an unmanned underwater vehicle. In this episode of Marine Tech Talk, we are joined by Justin Shapiro, Former Applications Engineer – Slocum Glider, Teledyne Webb Research. Justin discusses the recovery of Silbo in Ireland, the training course that the glider team was able to arrange there while Silbo was being cleaned up and refit, and then the planning and work that was done during leg three of the journey in the Canary Islands.
