Measuring Storm-generated Ocean Currents Using the Earth's Magnetic Field

Models to better understand and predict major climate events require ever more precise ocean & atmospheric data. This includes the accurate measurement of ocean current velocities throughout a water column, both before, during and after events such as passing hurricanes. The autonomous drifting ‘Electromagnetic Profiling’ float (APEX-EM) is perfectly suited for such a role. The APEX-EM can precisely measure water velocity using motionally-induced electric fields, which are themselves generated by ocean currents moving through the Earth’s magnetic field. These floats can also be dropped by parachute from aircraft. This makes them particularly suitable for deploying at short notice, such as ahead of major storms, or in hard-to-reach areas of the ocean such as near the polar regions.

Learn about more upcoming webinars at www.teledynemarine.com/link

Looking for tips about analyzing and interpreting ADCP data? Why not join us for the next episode of our continuing series of ADCP data webinars? Our host Paul Devine, joined by guest Dr. Peter Spain, will examine ADCP data sections of highly variable, two-layer flows near the mouth of the Mississippi River. As always, this session promises to be both educational - and entertaining. A Q&A period will follow this presentation, so bring along your questions.

Professor Dias will present a statistical analysis of nearshore waves observed during two major North–East Atlantic storms in 2015 and 2017. Surface elevations were measured with a 5-beam acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) at relatively shallow waters off the west coast of Ireland. To compensate for the significant variability of both sea states in time, a novel approach was used for analyzing the non-stationary surface-elevation series. The distributions of crest and wave heights are compared with theoretical predictions based on the Forristall, Tayfun and Boccotti models. In particular, the latter two models have been largely applied to and validated for deep-water waves. Profession Dias will show that they also describe well the characteristics of waves observed in relatively shallow waters.

In this episode we are talking to Michael Redmayne the US Sales Manager for Teledyne Caris, a marine geospatial software company. Teledyne Caris has just released a new cloud based platform that uses Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning algorithms to identify noise in 3D point clouds generated by acoustic sensor platforms. The end result is clean data in a fraction of the standard time without the usual manual “dot killing".
