Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) is an international facility hosted and owned by the University of Victoria (UVic), and managed and operated by the ONC Society, a not-for-profit established in 2007. The NEPTUNE and VENUS observatories, operated by ONC, provide critical long-term ocean observing and ocean science capacity. ONC collects and provides data needed to address pressing scientific and policy issues. The cabled infrastructure supplies continuous power and Internet connectivity to a broad suite of subsea instruments from coastal to deep-ocean environments. In 2009, ONC identified the need to daisy chain instrument platforms at a few of our locations to allow for an increased number of instrument platforms without running additional cables back to our nodes. The use of fibre optic cables allow data transmission over great distances but do require the addition of in-line media convertors and in some cases power up to 400 VDC between ONC junction boxes. In 2015 ONC approached Teledyne Oil and Gas - ODI to provide this specialized Electrical / Optical Flying Lead (EOFL) capable of the media conversions and power requirements of the ONC network. Four units were delivered and installed in 2016 of of Canada's west coast. ONC will discuss the sequence of this tool development and its field results to date.

The Electrical Optical Flying Lead (EOFL), part of the Active Flying Lead product line, features a Nautilus Rolling Seal Hybrid connector on one side, and a 7- or 12- way Nautilus electrical connector on the other, with a qualified integrated electrical/optical converter within the pressure balanced, oil-filled hose (PBOF). The electro-optical components are housed in a 1 ATM enclosure and protected on one side by glass to metal seal penetrators, and a hermetic fiber penetrator on the other.

The EOFL converts an electrical signal to a fiber optic signal, currently allowing up to 100 Mbit/sec data speed over 2 twisted pairs to be converted to one single fiber.

The EOFL is designed with a modular power converter, which allows for different power inputs to be used without redesign, increasing flexibility in project requirements and reducing development time and costs.
