Surveying the wreck of the HMS Hood (1891)

See how Teledyne Marine surveyed the wreck of the HMS Hood with the Teledyne RESON SeaBat T51 800 kilo hertz multibeam echosounder.

In August 2023, Teledyne Marine set out to survey the wreck of the HMS Hood (1891). The purpose of the survey was to document the status of the wreck with the latest in high resolution sonar technology.

The wreck is located at the entrance of Portland Harbour, Dorset, UK. The HMS Hood was built in 1891 with an impressive length of 125 meters. In 1914, after 20 years of service, she was deliberately sunk to act as a “blockship,” to stop U-boats or torpedoes from entering the port.

Still faithfully resting at the harbour entry, the wreck of the HMS Hood, once a popular dive spot, is deteriorating with age and it is understood, no longer safe to dive on.

By using the Teledyne RESON SeaBat T51 800 kilo hertz multibeam echosounder with the full swath and the smallest available receiver beamwidth, Teledyne Marine determined the status of the ship – delivering detailed, and accurate images of this largely forgotten piece of local naval history.
